Philosophy

A translator is a jack-of-all-trades... a foundation which is laid as early as during his or her schooling. In everyday practice, translators later learn that they must in fact try on a number of different hats before they find their niche in the translation profession. It is this same versatility and variety combined with a broad field of interests and the various contacts with clients that continue to motivate me to fully tap into my creative powers and my concentration. Reading between the lines and keeping one's eye on the target group allow a translator to arrive at an optimal level of communication between the author and the reader of the final translation.

After a job as an editor of dictionaries at Kluwer Technische Boeken (the universal dictionaries with which you are most likely familiar) and after having become acquainted with the world of fashion and the parquet floor industry where I was employed as a member of the sales staff, in 1991 I was offered the opportunity to take a position as a copywriter/translator for an IT group in Nieuwegein. Limburg continued to draw me back however, and after a year or so, I traded in my harmonious job as copywriter for an adventurous position as account manager for France, Germany and Scandinavia at two authentic Limburg companies in Maastricht and Vaals.

For practical reasons, I have worked full-time as a freelance technical translator since March of 1998- and the fact that I have been doing this for such a long time provides, in my opinion, sufficient indication of the great deal of pleasure I derive from the contact with clients that I have in my daily work activities, as well as the ever-changing material which I find on my plate - and who knows? Perhaps you can add a serving to this yourself in the future!

Personal interests

In addition to applying it to my work, I also put my creativity into practice in my culinary hobby. In 2000, I started a cooking club and for some thirty years, I have been active as a tenor and member of the board of a mixed choir. In order to find your way in a busy lifestyle as freelance translator, father of two, and partner, one must make room for relaxation and exercise - even if it is simply to be able to keep your back straight. Fitness, cycling, Swiss timepieces, and music and films more than fill up the scarce hours of free time left...
